An interest in art, athletics and wellness since childhood led Derek to the University of Kentucky where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Art Studio and a Bachelor of Arts in Education.
A majority of his freelance and corporate work has been with illustration, web design, advertising, and logo design. He has also taught in schools and assisted with the coaching of athletic teams.
He resides in the Bluegrass region of Kentucky.
